Looking for a way to challenge the stereotypes they are plagued with on a daily basis, Masquerade came up with the DOES GENDER MATTER? photo exhibition. With help from our partners and supporters, they planned out a series of images to combat prejudice based on gender stereotypes.
Individuality was the main theme for this image. To display this, we used the playlist on our phone as a comparative example. A personal playlist is completely unique, so much so, there will be no other the exact same in existence, however there will most likely be some that are similar. This was used to show that everyone is different and unique, not one person is the exact same but some are similar to others. It highlights how everyone is different yet a group who are similar has become an easy target for abuse: mentally, physically and emotionally.
Our focus here was to put forward the message that gender is who you are and is not affected by what you have in terms of biology or what you choose to do in your free time. Everyone should be able to do whatever they want and most importantly free from the fear of judgment based on personal, private choices
The main message of this section is that everyone should be free of judgement no matter who they love. In the background of the image, the word faggot is crossed, meaning that LGBTQ+ people have been forced to stand up for themselves as a result of discrimination from the heterosexual and cisgender majority. The word ‘faggot’ is extremely hurtful to anyone it is used against as it carries negative connotations. To begin with, the word is used to replace a word, most often that is negative and secondly, it is used in a negative manner. We explored the idea of assigned labels and the effect that it can carry for individuals who are expressing themselves because it is not ‘normal’. Fabulous is in the foreground, showing that discriminatory vocabulary should be willingly replaced with words of love and acceptance. The title explains that judgement should be based on love and not the associated label.
This image was created to challenge gender stereotypes by including a builder’s hat, usually associated with a man, as well as painted nails and fake eyelashes which are stereotypically feminine accessories. It also explores the idea of gender prejudice as the title of the plays on the words of the saying ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ meaning that you should not make a judgment on someone just because of their gender and appearance. The builder's hard hat represents the fact that women may get bullied in a job role that is a ‘male occupation’ and a man could be bullied for having a ‘woman’s job’, however, this goes unquestioned by society. We aimed to provoke thought on this matter by using the items to challenge stereotypes along with the way that people are treated as a result.
The thought behind this image is that what is expected is not necessarily needed or more importantly wanted. In some cases, the internal feelings of someone does not correspond with what is expected of them by others. We felt that we had to address the way that certain activities are said to be exclusively for one gender. The most common example of this is ballet, hence we used the ballet shoes to demonstrate that anyone, no matter what their gender is, can do whatever makes them happy. The controller contrasts to the ballet shoes as gaming is considered to be for men and not women. Both a male doing ballet and a female gaming can be a cause for bullying, in turn, the individual can become reluctant to continue with their hobby
The next picture made portrayed the story of gender and the elements that the vast majority of the population are unaware of. For example most consider Biology to be the only part of gender, however there is much more than meets the eye. Expression of gender can be the largest difficulty for someone experiencing discomfort with their gender assigned at birth as some feel that it is not who they want to be. Gender identity is a person's innermost concept as a male, female, both or neither. It is how people perceive themselves and what they wish to be called but it can be the same as, or different to the sex assigned to them at birth. In this section of our project, we displayed the separate components of gender and how they all contribute to gender as a whole. It was important to include the fact that biology is the reason why specific actions are considered masculine or feminine, consequently, the gender of a given person may be assumed as a result of their actions. Biology dictates the gender assigned to you at birth, even though this could be different to the feelings you develop and become more aware of during adolescence or later life. So the question we are asking to you is does gender matter?
In this photo, there are two people holding hands. The sex and gender of both people are unclear, which was done deliberately. The photo was designed to force our audience to question the gender of the people, and then ask themselves does it really matter? We decided to keep this photo simple and effective because it would be easier to understand therefore a wider audience would be able to recognize the way our society revolves around gender and causes them to question the image, to begin with
Here, we presented a cluster of different gender identities through their symbols. Throughout the project, we continued to all wear the same clothes as it meant that we would all look the same but more importantly, we would be able to emphasise that we may all look the same on the outside yet everyone is very different on the inside, weather that be because of their gender, sexual orientation or even their opinion on a given subject. Being different is not something to be ashamed of hence we should embrace the qualities that other people have rather than discriminate against them. The main message is that the sex assigned to us at birth can be a challenging aspect to some, but others are fortunate enough to not be forced to behave in a certain way or only be able to do things that are seen to be appropriate for that sex. Gender should not matter to anyone apart from yourself. You should be who you want to be, not what others expect of you.
